Why the health of your digestive system shows up in your hair

Last week we explored how stress and the nervous system influence hair shedding. But stress doesn't stop at cortisol — chronic stress alters the gut barrier, shifts the microbiome, and increases systemic inflammation, all of which directly impact the scalp and hair growth cycle.
If hair reflects internal health, the gut is often where the story begins.
The Gut–Hair Connection
Digestion isn't just about breaking down food — it's the gateway for nutrient absorption, immune regulation, and inflammatory control.
Hair follicles are metabolically active tissue. They need a steady supply of iron, zinc, vitamin B12, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and vitamin D. If the gut lining is inflamed or absorption is impaired, even a nutrient-dense diet may not reach the follicles.
Nearly 70% of the immune system lives in the gut. When the gut barrier is compromised, immune activation rises, and hair follicles are highly sensitive to those inflammatory signals — growth slows, and follicles get pushed prematurely into the resting (telogen) phase. When enough follicles enter that phase at once, shedding increases noticeably — a pattern known as telogen effluvium.
The encouraging part: this is often a reset, not permanent damage. The follicles haven't disappeared, they've paused. When the body feels safe again — inflammation down, nutrients available — growth resumes.
How Inflammation Disrupts the Hair Cycle
Hair grows best in a low-inflammation environment. When inflammation becomes chronic — from infection, stress, food sensitivities, or gut imbalance — follicles get signals that prioritize defense over growth. This is why people often notice more hair loss after illness, after antibiotics, during autoimmune flares, or during prolonged digestive distress. Resources get pulled to treat a simmering gut infection or a viral inection rather than to produce and sustain hair.
The scalp often mirrors what's happening internally — itching, flaking, or increased oil production are frequently signs of internal immune activation, not just isolated scalp issues.

When the Gut Barrier Weakens
The gut lining is designed to let nutrients in while keeping inflammatory compounds out. Chronic stress, infection, antibiotics, processed foods, alcohol, and environmental toxins can weaken this barrier — sometimes called increased intestinal permeability, or "leaky gut."
When that happens, inflammatory molecules can enter the bloodstream and activate the immune system.
Hair follicles get the same message they'd get during illness: conserve energy.
The follicle isn't the problem — it's responding to the environment it's in. The body won't invest in growth when it's focused on survival.

Food sensitivities that seem to increase over time
Fatigue despite adequate sleep
Brain fog
Skin issues like eczema, acne, or psoriasis
Worsening shedding after antibiotics or illness
Autoimmune patterns, including thyroid conditions
These symptoms don't always feel dramatic — often they're subtle and easy to normalize.

Bringing It Back to the Root
Hair loss rarely begins at the scalp. It begins downstream — in the gut, the immune system, the nervous system, and the hormonal signals that inform your internal environment.
